This blog is not primarily financially driven. I established it as an outlet for ideas that should outlive the social network du jour. To connect with anyone that cares about those ideas. And occasionally to rework content I previously published under other names, as far back as the mid-1990s.
Regardless, the FTC requires bloggers to disclose whenever we might have hidden interests or unspoken biases related to recommendations. So, here you go…
A promise before we start: I will not post anything on this site just because someone paid me or promised to pay me, whether with money, services, or anything else. Mistakes will be made, opinions will change, and facts will evolve. But my word on this site is my reputation, and neither are for sale.
Disclosures
First, the obvious: I make software for a living. You can see current and past employers on my LinkedIn profile. The content on this site does not reflect those of my employers unless explicitly stated otherwise, only myself. I avoid writing about them on here as best I can. Also, I am not a direct investor in any software company, though I do have collective investments that likely include some. I’ll let you know if that changes as clearly and honestly as I legally can.
Second, the less obvious: Per the FTC rules, if I interview someone for a post who grabs the bill for lunch, I would need to disclose this. Same is true if I use an Amazon link that gets me 8 cents instead of an Amazon link that gets me 0 cents. If I post a picture in a t-shirt someone gave me at a conference or mention the products they gave me swag for, same deal. Disclaimers all over the place. Listing this all the time would be painful for me and you. So just assume the following all hold true:
While most of these probably don’t actually apply to this site for me, let’s just assume they do in case things ever evolve. That way I can avoid updating this page. Future-proofing ftw.
Please feel free to use the text and images on this page with proper attribution (thanks, Tim!). There is no reason why each blogger should have to reinvent the wheel.
